There are many ways to use stale bread, but today I wanted to share with you the perfect fall breakfast recipe. No need for fancy ingredients, and if you are not so comfortable on the stove but still want to impress – look no further; you are at the right place.
Pain perdu is French for ‘French toasts’, but it actually translates to ‘lost bread’ because we originally use stale bread to make it (get it?)
For this recipe, you can use any kind of bread, and it does not have to be ‘lost’ (aka stale) – brioche works as well.
I grew up eating and making these, so I’ve never actually come up with proper measurements, but it’s very straightforward, so just go with the flow!
Ingredients
- Bread (baguette, squarebread, wholegrains… WATHEVER!)
- Half a liter of milk
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon of sugar
- Butter
- 1 coffee spoon of vanilla extract
- Icing sugar (optional)
- Cinnamon powder (optional)
- Maple syrup (optional)
- Blueberries (optional)
Steps:
- In a bowl, add the milk, the eggs, the vanilla extract, and the sugar until obtaining a homogeneous batter.
- Deep your bread in the batter and put it in a hot buttered pan.
- Once golden, turn the slice onto the other side.
ET VOILÀ!
You can now add any toppings you like; I love adding maple syrup, icing sugar, and blueberries. I also enjoy sprinkling some cinnamon powder, but feel free to simply add it to the batter.
You don’t have any icing sugar? Just put some granulated white sugar into a blender and blend until you obtain icing sugar!
ENJOY
Garance xx
